From average beginnings to all-star performances, Tom Flick reached his goal of playing in the NFL when the Washington Redskins drafted him in 1981. Prior to his seven years in the NFL, Flick was an All-American quarterback for the University of Washington Huskies. In his senior year, Flick led the Huskies to the Pac-10 Championship and the Rose Bowl, was voted the Pac-10 Player of the Year and elected by his teammates as Most Inspirational and Team Captain. Since 1988, Flick has tackled the business world with the same focus and spirit that earned him honors as a collegiate and professional quarterback. Personally, he addresses over 60,000 men and women each year on high performance strategies for leadership, teamwork, change, and personal growth. Clients include Microsoft, Starbucks, Merrill Lynch, Ritz-Carlton Hotels, NAPA Auto Parts, Shell Oil and the US Army Rangers, to name a few. Happily married since 1985, he and his wife, Molly, have two children. An avid fly-fisherman, golfer and reader, Flick is most proud of his role as husband and father.
Dr. Martin A. Regalia is vice president for economic and tax policy and chief economist at the United States Chamber of Commerce. Prior to coming to the Chamber in April 1993, Regalia served as the director of research for the Savings and Community Bankers of America (SCBA). Before that, in June 1992 when the group was founded, Regalia was executive vice president of policy development and chief economist for the National Council of Community Bankers — one of SCBA’s predecessor organizations. Regalia also served as a principal analyst in the Fiscal Analysis Division at the Congressional Budget Office, as an economist for the board of governors of the Federal Reserve System in both the Banking and Capital Markets Sections and as a financial economist for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. In addition, he served as a consultant to the Thrift Institutions Advisory Council to the board of governors of the Federal Reserve System and was a visiting instructor at The George Washington University School of Government and Business. Regalia appears on national television news and debate programs, testifies before congressional committees, authors articles and publications on a variety of economic topics and speaks to many groups across the country. Regalia has a B.A. with honors in economics from the University of Santa Clara as well as an M.A. in economics and a Ph.D. in monetary economics from the University of Wisconsin.
Kevin MacDonald is a coach and former club manager. He started his coaching practice in 2000 and in 2003 became the Coach for The Club Managers Association of America. Since
taking on the role as architect and leader of the association’s coaching program he has been asked to work with people in all areas of the club business. He has contributed articles to five different industry publications and does so regularly for three. Together with Shelley MacDougall, he has created The Extraordinary Leader - an innovative leadership program and community dedicated to building leaders at all levels of the club industry. His focus is on elevating the professionalism and the lives of the people he works with. MacDonald speaks from the heart with warmth and humor. He is a polished story teller who is dedicated to ensuring that an audience doesn’t just leave with some new ideas, but is inspired to take action that will make a lasting difference.
Shelley MacDougall is dedicated to creating leaders in life. Whether she is coaching one on one, facilitating learning for groups or delivering keynote presentations, Shelley’s dynamic style and compassion for people are undeniable. After obtaining her business degree at The Ohio State University, MacDougall has invested the past 19 years in training and leading others. She is grateful to have had the opportunity to work with some top organizations. At the age of 23, she began her training career as an instructor with the Dale CarnegieTM organization. She furthered her experience in Human Resources and in senior leadership positions in the hospitality industry – including Marriott International, and The Glencoe Club (Calgary, Alberta), one of North America’s leading private sports and social clubs. Much of her current work involves coaching and leadership training in the club industry. She has presented and coached at CMAA World Conferences on Club Management. As a coach and facilitator, MacDougall works with individuals at all levels of organizations, inspiring them to enhance their lives. She is a results-oriented coach that truly believes in personal accountability. She takes her business seriously, and herself … lightly!
Kevin Reilly is a senior tax authority for PKF Witt Mares and serves as a technical resource to the firm in interpreting and applying tax law to numerous situations related to various industries, including real estate and hospitality. Reilly is the National Director of Taxation and Chair of the International Tax Committee for PKF International Ltd. Recognized as the leading club tax expert in the country, he serves as Director of Club Services for PKF North America. In addition, he is a member of the Washington Metropolitan Club Controllers Chapter of the Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP) and served as President of the Chapter. Reilly is a regular columnist for industry publications and is a contributing author to the Fourth Edition of Club Management Operations, published by CMAA and the First Edition of Accounting for Club Operations. He is also the editor of Federal Taxes and the Private Clubs and Clubs in Town and Country. Reilly has appeared on C-SPAN, CNBC and the public broadcasting system (PBS) to discuss tax issues. He is a guest lecturer at universities and colleges on tax issues and is a frequent speaker at conferences for industry groups, including the Annual and Legislative Conferences for CMAA and the Annual Club and Hotel Controllers Conferences for HFTP.
David C. Whitlock is a Shareholder with Littler Mendelson, P.C. With over 700 attorneys and more than 45 offices nationwide, Littler Mendelson is the nation’s largest labor and employment law firm representing management. Whitlock specializes in the area of immigration and nationality law and began practicing in this area of law in 1986. His practice includes extensive visa work, handling both temporary and permanent visa cases, as well as advice regarding compliance with the I-9, discrimination, and document abuse provisions of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 and litigation arising under that statute. Whitlock is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the ABA-affiliated association for attorneys practicing immigration law. He is a frequent lecturer and presenter on immigration topics and also advises employers regarding best practices in employment-related topics. He was named a “Georgia Super Lawyer, Immigration” in 2004, was listed in Chambers USA, America’s Leading Business Lawyers 2006 and was selected for inclusion in Who’s Who Legal Georgia in 2008. Whitlock earned a baccalaureate degree from Hamilton College in Clinton, NY, in 1977, majoring in English and Government. After several years in the publishing, insurance and advertising industries in the Midwest, he returned to school and graduated with honors from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1986. He currently practices out of the Atlanta office of Littler Mendelson.
As the President and Founder of Creative Golf Marketing, Steve Graves has rendered over 650 consultations and membership marketing initiatives for private club facilities. These consultations and marketing initiatives focused primarily on increasing the Club’s revenues, marketability, efficiency and long-term financial stability. Mr. Graves is an author within many golf industry publications and has been recognized as a dynamic speaker within the private Club industry. He has been a speaker at dozens of CMAA continuing education sessions offered by CMAA chapters from across the country. Graves was a Class A member of the PGA of America from 1981-1998. As a member of the PGA of America, Steve served as a faculty member and instructor for the Education Department where he taught over 35 seminars and business schools. Additionally, reacting to requests and concerns from Club officials regarding Member attrition and new Member recruitment issues, Graves has founded the Private Club Network. The Private Club Network represents a value added benefit for the members of private clubs which comprise the Private Club Network. Members have the opportunity to play approximately 200 private courses from around the country for cart fees only. Graves is a 1978 graduate of Oklahoma State University with a BS Degree in Personnel Management and was a member of the Oklahoma State University Golf Team from 1974 to 1978.
Edward Vaughan is the President of ETS Corporation, a Silver Advantage Parter, a recognized leader in the merchant processing and ATM driving fields. Vaughan pioneered internet-based credit, gift card and debit transaction processing by designing the EMoneyTM transaction platform, ranked as “the most secure platform in the world today” by MasterCard International risk assessment management program. Vaughan and ETS continue to differentiate themselves from other processors through cutting edge products and services, continuous product development and relationship management. Vaughan will address attendees innovative payment solutions and how clubs can benefit by increasing operational efficiencies, as well as reducing AR by offering their members convenient recurring payment options, benefits and rewards
programs thereby enhancing their experience.
Gregg Patterson, General Manager of The Beach Club for the last 26 years and Adjunct Professor at Cal Poly Pomona since 1987, holds an M.P.S. degree from Cornell University and a B.A. in British Imperial History from Colgate University. In addition to his ongoing responsibilities at The Beach Club and Cal Poly Pomona, Patterson has been a visiting lecturer at various club management seminars, assistant manager conferences and hospitality forums around the country and in Canada, Ireland, the U.K., Thailand, Singapore and Korea; has spoken at Cornell University and the University of Houston and is a visiting lecturer at UNLV; has been active on the Board of Directors of the Southern California Chapter of CMAA; serves on the Board of Trustees of the Maine Central Institute; and is on the faculty of the Business Management Institute at Cal Poly Pomona. His writings have been published in The BoardRoom magazine, Club Management magazine and Club Management Perspectives and he is the author of Reflections on the Club Experience, an anthology of essays on club cultures and operations. When not involved in his professional responsibilities, you will find Gregg pursuing one of his many “developed passions” such as reading, traveling domestically and abroad, riding and repairing motorcycles, bicycle touring, playing pick-up basketball and paddle tennis, kayaking, camping, scuba diving or flying his airplane throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. Gregg and his wife Elaine have been happily settled in Los Angeles, CA, for the last 23 years.
