John D. Hightower, The Peninsula Golf & Country Club

Rather than payout all the $110,000 collected for the 2000 Holiday Recognition program at one time, and to ensure that the staff was not solicied within their own department, we decided to allocate a portion of the annual fund to both the occasion of birth (an employee who had a son or daughter or the occasions of the death of an employees parent(s) or spoues. For a birth, the Club presents a card, a token gift and $200 cash. In the case of the loss of an employees parent, the Club sends a card with a small bouquet of flowers and $100. The employee is made aware that this is a gift from the Membership and Staff.

This is our way to try to keep team member morale high. We have an employee Relations Committee that organizes events for the employees at the Club. The types of events we do for our team members in any given year include a Family Barbecue, a Halloween Costume Judging and Pumpkin Carving Contest, an Employee Appreciation Dinner and Dance, Employee Intra-Mural Sports Competitions (soccer, basketball and softball), a trip to the Santa Anita Race Track, a trip to Dodgers Stadium and monthly birthday parties. We also have an employee of the Month program, where nominations are put forward by other employees.
