The Director
of Golf Course Maintenance weekly email update
to the membership informs and educates them
on upcoming maintenance practices, which
will affect the playability and appearance
of our golf courses in the near future. The
impact these emails have had is substantial
as demonstrated to Michael Thomas, our Director
of Golf Course Maintenance, and to the golf
operations staff via the positive feedback
both have received.

Irrigation
heads need to be raised frequently due to
settling and turf build-up. Low irrigation
heads cause poor water distribution and difficult
playing conditions. Previously, a large area
of turf was cut and dug up to find the irrigation
pipe and raise the sprinkler head. These
probes increase efficiency by locating sprinkler
heads quickly and limiting the area of turf
disturbed, resulting in a much neater appearance. |

New protection
for spraying green: Use three-by-six foot
pieces of outdoor carpeting to absorb herbicide
overspray of putting greens. This practice
protects the Bermuda grass collars from herbicide
damage and prevents need to re-sod.

The site
map is handed out to the golf course maintenance
new hires. This has helped them quickly become
familiarized with their assigned worksites.
It is a great visual aid to help employees
find their way in the dark without much verbal
instruction from the manager. It improves
efficiency.

The course
superintendent implemented these procedures
in 2007. The results were very noticeable
to both the members and staff. |

We installed
ice and water dispensing machines in the
golf course restrooms to replace coolers
and ice buckets. This enhances the presentation
and cleanliness of the restroom on the course
and provides fresh ice and water to the golfers.
It also eliminates the daily task of replenishing
the ice and water. |
