After large
member events in the Ballroom, there were
often scuff marks left on the floor which
were time-consuming to remove. One of our
employees discovered that these marks could
be removed through the use of a tennis ball.
Now a tennis ball on the end of a mop handle
is used daily to remove unwanted scuff marks.
In addition to being quick and easy, the
mark remover does not damage the floor.

Plastic containers
were purchased for each of our seasonal guest
workers to store their bed linens, towels,
and other personal items when they leave
for the season. We store the containers at
the club, and when the workers return, their
personal items are ready to use. Previously,
the Club has had to purchase these items
new each year, resulting in a large expenditure.
The Club still must purchase new items for
new employees, but the expense is much less. |

The utilization
of free mulch from our home county has enhanced
the club by providing material to landscape
the tree lines and beds. The mulch is generated
at the landfill from yard waste throughout
the county. The landfill creates a high quality
material, but does not have room to store
it. The debris can be utilized in an environmentally
friendly and productive manner. Not only
is the club partnering to recycle the counties
debris, but it is able to create sharply
manicured beds at a very low cost. |

Water is
a precious commodity in the Florida Keys.
As a green initiative and also to save on
the cost of water, a gray water recycling
system was incorporated into a new 120-bed
dormitory constructed to house staff. The
5,000 gallon system collects water from sinks
and showers, treats it, and re-circulates
the water to be used for flushing toilets. |

We purchased
a machine to automatically endorse the backs
of checks sent into the club. Some days,
we receive as many as 400-500 checks in the
mail. Prior to this, all checks were hand-stamped. |

Over time,
color-impregnated plastic hazard stakes and
out-of-bounds stakes become faded due to
the sun and weather. Traditional spray paint
will not adhere to the plastic stakes. A
$3 can of spray paint made for plastic will
cover up multiple stakes, versus spending
$8 to replace each one.

We learned
the hard way that we needed to protect our
chairs. The time the staff spent cleaning
them after a children’s event created
unnecessary payroll costs. The cost to rent
chair covers was almost $4 a chair, so this
year we used clear trash bags and tied them
with a red ribbon. The cost to do this was
$0.52 a chair.
We also like
to have color on the tables. To add color,
we looked into renting overlays. The cost
to rent the overlays was going to be $15
per table. Instead, we bought flat, twin
sized sheets in the color red and put them
over white under-lays. The sheets cost $2.50
each. |

For several
years, Westmoor has been carrying and counting
excess merchandise. This year we sold all
non-logo Westmoor merchandise on ebay starting
two weeks prior to Christmas. We sold over
20 items and reduced our cost of goods by
$1200. |

The club
was looking for ways to save on out maintenance
labor budget. The 32 widescreens at WRC typically
took four maintenance staff members two full
days to take down and store. The widescreens
are bulky and heavy, which makes them very
difficult to move. The Spring time posed
the same challenges, however, by having the
nets already hung by the center string, installation
is cut in half, and only requires one person.
This system eliminated three staff members,
reducing the possibility of injury and freeing
up a large amount of winter storage space.
Each year this saves approximately $1200. |

We implemented
a payroll check audit to increase internal
controls. On random pay periods we take the
paychecks from Human Resources and physically
hand each paycheck to the employees and have
them provide a photo ID. |
