2007 marks
the second year of the Teddy Bear Project.
During the holiday season, the children on
Farmington give their time and energy to
stuff a bear for a child at the University
of Virginia Children’s Hospital. After
the stuffing is complete, each child gives
the bear that he or she created a loving
hug and gently places it under the Christmas
tree.

This past
summer we launched a new incentive based
program called “Get Out and Play.” Our
goal was to facilitate as much play as possible
for our junior tennis players. Children were
awarded points for practicing, participating
in club tennis events, and competing in our
junior interclub matches. They recorded their
hours on a scorecard and placed it in our
score box. All juniors received t-shirts,
a banner was placed courtside and all of
our flyers and pamphlets encouraged Get Out
and Play. |

The junior
after-school clinics were designed to offer
junior golfers the ability to continue with
junior golf instruction into the school year.
The afternoon clinics allow juniors to let
off some energy before dinner. The program
incorporates the indoor golf practice facility
and other elements such as trivia games,
word searches, relay races, and team competitions.
Nearly every session of the program has been
filled, so we added a November session to
meet the demand.

The Juvenile
Birthday Card Program was designed to recognize
our youngest members, and provide them with
great memories in years to come of growing
up at the Club. It was created to make them
feel special and be recognized on their big
day as they hand their sundae ticket to restaurant
staff, and are wished a “Happy Birthday.” |

What could
be more fun than beating your mom in a sack
race? How about winning against your dad
in a tug-of-war contest? To celebrate our
Club’s centennial, we gathered CCV
families for an afternoon of friendly competition
and delicious food. We played popular games
from the last hundred years, and created
new memories that will last into the next
hundred years! |

As we are
a very family oriented club, there are many
children present in all areas of the facility
at any given time. While etiquette classes
are offered, the Club felt that a monthly
column in the Granite News magazine
would help to reemphasize proper manners
and behaviors for children while at the Club. |

The Junior
Naturalist program is a six week, summer
nature camp designed for the 7-12 year old “tweens.” It
provides our science and adventure-minded
younger members with a fun opportunity to
safely explore the beautiful natural areas
in and around our southern Appalachian mountain
home. |

Since the
opening of the Westmoor Club, Friday evenings
were set aside for family BBQ Night. This
event was always a great success and much
enjoyed by our family members. In 2007, the
Club took this evening one step further.
Following the dinner we began showing a children-appropriate
movie to attract more families to this fun
evening. |

Families
with young children are rapidly becoming
the majority at Lakewood Country Club. This
has created a need for young children at
the club other then the usual holiday events.
Attendance has grown immensely as well as
a la carte business on one of our slowest
nights of the week. |

This idea
has enhanced our Club’s operations
by increasing the sales volume in member
a la carte dining. It has increased attendance
at events that we offer Kidz Klub, and it
has also increased attendance at the monthly
youth and family events. |
