Environmental Performance Audit

What is the Environmental Performance Audit?

The Audit is an internal, self-assessment or evaluation that uses standard, widely accepted environmental management practices to measure overall environmental performances. The Audit provides a simple, inexpensive means to evaluate current management practices. It can also be used as a set of guidelines to help you plan and establish appropriate environmental strategies in areas that are not currently addressed by management.

What is included in the Environmental Performance Audit?

The Audit is divided into sections based on the various components of a club facility, such as buildings and landscaping, dining facilities, golf course, and sport amenities. You will complete only those sections that apply to your club. Each section is intended to stand alone for each club facility as well as be part of the overall club audit.

The Audit addresses management practices the safeguard and enhance the quality of the environment. It primarily examines six key components pertinent to nearly all facilities. For each component, a series of Environmental Performance Indicators, or management practices, have been developed to help you evaluate your performance in each area.

  • Environmental Planning, Training, and Communication

  • Wildlife Habitat Enhancement and Management

  • Energy Conservation

  • Water Conservation and Water Quality Management

  • Chemical Use Reduction and Safety through Integrated Pest Management, Best Management Practices, and other Environmentally Sound Maintenance Facility

  • Waste Reduction and Recycling

How do I evaluate our environmental performance using the Audit?

The Audit provides a series of statements regarding environmental management practices. To evaluate your performance, you must review each statement and determine if the practice is being carried out at your club. Your score is based on the number of environmental practices in place.

The Environmental Performance Audit is a self-assessment and not a test. There are no right or wrong answers. The audit should be seen as a guide to help you understand the environmental attributes of the club and its management.

As you complete the audit for each component of the club, an Environmental Performance Index will be calculated for that individual component. The intent is to provide immediate feedback to the managers or each component of the club. At the end of the Audit, your total score will be calculated and an Environmental Performance Index will be used to rate your overall environmental performance. The final score will highlight strengths, and any opportunities to improve environmental management of your facilities.
