| After
reading an article about US Troop involvement with the rebuilding
process in Iraq, staff and board members of Green
Hills Country Club of Millbrae, CA, wanted to find
a way to help. Working with members and vendors, the club
put together a day of fun and food for the San Bruno
23rd Marine troop and the 63rd U.S. Army
RRC in Alameda. Troops and their families were invited
for a day of golf - or to play in the pool - and a BBQ luncheon
complete with awards for participants. Members and troops
were paired together in Shotgun/Scramble format.
Vendors
donated food and staff volunteered their time. Members of
the club paid a fee to play and a total of $7,500 was raised.
The Military personnel that had returned from Iraq said the
children there were always asking the Americans for candy
and soccer balls. Working with the Kickers Soccer Shop of
Belmont, CA, the troops received 1,100 soccer balls to donate
to the children of Iraq.
The
club hopes to repeat this type of event in the future.
