CMAA currently has more than 1,200 student
members and maintains 42 student chapters and colonies at colleges
and universities throughout the United States. Any student
who is studying hospitality management at a 4-year college
or university may apply for a CMAA student membership even
if there is not a chapter currently on your campus.
Looking to start a chapter? Here's how:
• Student chapters must be formed and maintained by a minimum of ten (10)
student members.
• There are supervised by a faculty member or the Dean of the college/university
(Faculty Advisor) and counseled by an active member of CMAA (Liaison Manager)
• After at least one calendar year, a petition to form a student chapter
is forwarded to the Chapter/Member Services Committee for approval by the CMAA
Board of Directors.
The petition must include the following:
a. Proposed name of Student Chapter and location
b. Names, address and designations of proposed officers,
pro tempore
c. Supporting letter from the CMAA "senior" chapter
responsible and the Liaison Manager stating his/her willingness
to serve.
d. Supporting letter from the Dean of the college/university
or designated Faculty Advisor.
e. Bylaws for the proposed student chapter (template
will be provided)
It is the practice that student chapters function as a chapter for at least
one calendar year before petitioning. This will allow groups time to create
a strong foundation on which a chapter can grow. During this pre-petition year,
the group is referred to informally as a student "colony". The colony
period begins on the date the National Headquarters receives a minimum of ten
(10) completed/signed student membership applications including the annual
dues (currently $50 per student member).
For further information on starting a student chapter at your college/university,
please contact National Headquarters at (703) 739-9500, via e-mail at studentinfo@member.cmaa.org or
