World Conference and GIS PixIn 2009, the CMAA Pelican Chapter and the city of New Orleans welcomed CMAA members and guests to the World Conference on Club Management and Golf Industry Show. The southern charm and exciting atmosphere of New Orleans served as the perfect backdrop for a week packed with education and networking. More than 80 professional development programs, including Pre- and At-Conference workshops, covered topics such as Riding, Reflecting and Pursuing “The CCM Mission,” Implementing the Club Governance Model, Leading at the SPEED of TRUST, Wine Making 101 and many others.

The Opening Business Session keynote address was presented by Chris Carmichael, founder and CEO of Carmichael Training Systems, Inc., and personal coach to cancer survivor and seven-time Tour de France Champion Lance Armstrong. To finish on a high note, the Closing Business Session featured John Furlong discussing how leadership is about finding a way to contribute to the success of your teammates. Social events included “Celebrate the World of Carnival,” presenting culinary delights and libations from the world of carnival, which included South American, European and New Orleans influences.

Peter Homberg, CCM, chaired the 2009 Conference Committee. The Pelican Chapter -- with host chapter advisors Robert Crifasi, CCM, and Jennifer Burke -- provided excellent pre-planning support and precise follow-through during the entire Conference.

The Golf Industry Show (GIS) was held at the New Orleans Convention Center. This innovative trade show is designed for club managers, golf course professionals and owners/operators of club and golf facilities. It features the largest exhibit floor in the industry, combining education, networking and solutions for golf and club industry professionals. Attendees see the newest products and find services for every facet of the hospitality and club facility industry.

The 2010 Conference Committee, chaired by Michael Leemhuis, CCM, has been planning the next Conference, to be held in conjunction with the GIS, February 8-13. CMAA’s Golden State Chapter is the 2010 Conference host. Professional development will again be at the forefront with more than 70 education programs in addition to joint education and exhibits offered at the GIS. This year the GIS will feature the ”Show Within a Show,” giving club managers the opportunity to view in one area clubhouse-related products and services.

CMAA’s 2011 World Conference on Club Management and Exposition will be held in Orlando, FL.
