Kevin E. Carroll, CCM, CCE
It has been a tremendous honor to serve as your President over the past year. Our Association has made strides in many areas this year from online professional development to membership and risk management. These are just a few of the highlights of the year.
Our year began with our 84rd World Conference and the Club Business Expo in Orlando, FL. The great destination drew close to record numbers to the event and attendees were treated to amazingly warm weather. Members raved about the new format which provided the same educational, networking and social opportunities in a condensed schedule. Featuring new speakers and expert presenters on the latest topics as well as highly participatory round-table sessions, club management professionals attended more than 24 hours of professional development. Attendees were inspired and enlightened by CMAA’s acclaimed general speaker sessions, Dan Clark and Jim Kane.
The return of the CMAA exposition, the two-day Club Business Expo, was highly successful. Hundreds of club-industry specific vendors shared their latest products, services and resources. All under the roof of the Orlando Marriott World Center & Convention Center, the show served as a great space for networking not only with the vendors but also with other members.
In May, CMAA held its annual National Committee Weekend which enhances the governance of our organization. The Long Range Planning, Chapter/Member Services, Club Management Institute and Certification Committees met for half-day meetings to tackle the business of our Association. CMAA’s other standing committees met via telephone during the month of May. Committee members provided valuable insight, feedback and direction for CMAA’s Board of Directors and National Headquarters Staff whose combined efforts foster sustainability for CMAA.
Proposed by CMAA’s Committees and approved for presentation to the membership by the CMAA Board of Directors, there are three bylaw propositions for your consideration in the 2012 election. Specifically, the proposed bylaw changes address the timing of the CMAA Annual Meeting (best known as the World Conference), the removal of Provisional status and a subsequent change to the Alumnus Membership.
In August, we announced our membership campaign and initiative. Through the efforts of the Chapter Member Services Committee and the CMAA National Board, we have endeavored to address the barriers to membership which have been noted by our chapter leaders who serve on the forefront of recruitment. Our goal is to expand our membership and connect with the individuals in our industry who can benefit from our professional development and resources.
We are addressing these issues through a number of steps. Most impressive is the new Step Membership. Under this new national dues structure, new/rejoining members pay $500 for the first year of dues, $650 for the second year and, ultimately, step up to the prevailing rate in year three. In addition, the administrative fee of $100 has been eliminated for all joining members. Members now also have the option to pay their dues in installments. CMAA now offers an eight month payment plan for CMAA national dues renewals. To date, the response to the membership campaign has exceeded all expectations. Our recruitment goals have been met and exceeded for the last five months of 2011. The CMAA Chapters should be commended for their efforts in this area.
As CMAA President and Chairman of the 2012 World Conference Committee, I am very excited to present the slate of amazing opportunities and experiences which will be offered at the 84th World Conference and Club Business Expo on February 24-28, 2012, in New Orleans, LA. This annual event continues to be refined to offer all attendees the top-notch professional development, networking events and so much more.
More than 70 sessions will be offered during the event featuring 45 percent first-time presenters. Learn directly from former New Orleans Saints Quarterback and New Orleanian Archie Manning and internationally sought-after speaker, author and organizational consultant Joseph A. Michelli, Ph.D., as well as more than 50 other industry experts. Covering all 10 CMAA competency areas, the sessions provide innovative and practical information.
Do not miss the return of The Club Tour as we celebrate the hospitality of Louisiana. The Pelican Chapter is rolling out the red carpet to share three exceptional clubs – the New Orleans Country Club, Metairie Country Club and Southern Yacht Club - which stand as hallmarks of the hospitality for which our industry is known.
World Conference is a culmination of all of these individual experiences. It truly is more than an event. It is THE ONE event where I am surrounded by club management professionals who understand the industry, the profession and why I enjoy it. I encourage you to embrace this experience for 2012.
Once again, I thank you for the opportunity you bestowed upon me to serve as your CMAA President. It is a year that I will not forget.
