Special Club Features

Birchwood Country Club is a small family friendly private club on the Westport-Norwalk line. The club boasts a nine hole golf course listed in the Top Ten of Nine Hole Golf Couses by Golf World Magazine. The club operates ten and one half months per year. The dining room is open six days and four nights in the high season and five days and two nights during the low season.

Club is open 6 days per week, 11 months per year.

Brief Job Description

Birchwood Country Club in Westport, CT, seeks to hire an experienced assistant manager. Our ideal candidate is a sociable, outgoing manager who exceeds members expectations and is looking for a growth-oriented role in terms of responsibilities. We seek a manager who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys daily interaction with members to ensure a quality experience and exhibits strong leadership skills and a positive motivational management style. A thorough knowledge of contemporary food and beverage standards and practices is essential to success in this position.

Candidate Qualifications

Substantial private club or hospitality industry experience with management and supervisory experience, event planning and execution and progressive professional advancement.

Job Knowledge, Core Competencies, and Expectations

  • Must be motivated, energetic and enthusiastic about club management and show a commitment to member services.
  • Experience in all aspects of club food service; a la carte, banquet, snack bar.
  • Experience in marketing the club to prospective members and clients for membership and banquet sales.
  • Knowledge and experience with weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs and special event planning and execution. 
  • Ability to develop creative revenue generating strategies
  • Must demonstrate appropriate analytical skills, attention to detail, organizational and project management skills.
  • Working knowledge of various computer software Excel, Word and POS programs
  • Knowledge of management requirements for housekeeping, maintenance and repair and security functions at the club.
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions; skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.
  • Improves service by communicating and assisting employees to understand member needs, providing guidance, feedback, and individual coaching when needed.
  • Responds in a timely manner to member requests and communications.
  • Holds daily staff meetings to communicate any on-going concerns or upcoming events, delegate proper responsibilities as needed.
  • Oversees scheduling of staff members to ensure proper levels of service to exceed member satisfaction, while maintaining fiscal responsibility
  • Assists supervisors in understanding team members ever changing needs and expectations, and how to exceed them.
  • Celebrates and fosters decisions that result in successes as well as failures.
  • Communicates areas that need attention to staff and follows up to verify understanding
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform required role in emergency situations.
  • Ability to function as club’s general manager during his absence

Educational Requirements

Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university preferred.

Hospitality Management major preferred.
