Summer 2022

No Summer Vacation from These Great Opportunities

Jack GrehanGreetings to all as we enter mid-summer with many clubs hitting their peak season of activities and events while other clubs may be enjoying some off-season down time. Either way we all know that clubs have many issues and challenges facing them each day. Club management is without doubt a challenging industry with many outstanding achievements and rewards. Enjoy every minute of it!

Our Wine Society Board of Managers are engaged in providing many exciting opportunities for our members, not least of which involves planning for Wine Society events taking place at next year’s CMAA World Conference and Club Business Expo in Orlando, FL. Bret Coad, CCM, CCE, has been exploring several terrific ideas for a Pre-Conference Workshop with the Orlando area capable of providing some excellent venues to work with. Kevin Mauldin is actively working to line up exciting presenters for our Annual Wine Society Business Meeting, which should be announced soon. Blaine Burgess, CCM, CCE, and Ryan Brennan, CCM, are reviewing possible locations and wineries to work with for planning our Annual Wine Dinner. As we get closer to finalizing these and other activities that we can expect to enjoy at Conference, we will announce further details.

Board Member Ryan Brennan, CCM, has been spending a great deal of time staying connected with the Wine Society Chapter Representatives. We want to make sure that each Chapter has assigned a Rep and that they are kept informed of all activities the Wine Society provides to our members. Ryan has organized several educational webinars for members to enjoy and we would like to be sure those opportunities are being clearly promoted to each Chapter. If you are your Chapter’s designated Wine Society Chapter Rep and you are not receiving this information, please contact Sara Thom so we can update our Chapter Rep directory.

Summer is a good time to update your club’s wine list and Wine Society members should be sure to enter their club’s lists into the Annual Wine Program Awards. Entries should be submitted by Thursday, September 1, to be considered for recognition at the Annual Business Meeting. Complete details for entering wine lists can be found online.

There is also the Warren Arseneaux Honorary Scholarship, which is available to Wine Society members to apply. This scholarship is awarded annually to one recipient and covers the registration fee associated with the BMI Wine & Food Experience and other travel/lodging expenses (totaling up to not more than $5,000, collectively for registration travel, lodging, etc.). The deadline to apply is Monday, October 3.

Lastly, there will be one position available on the Wine Society Board of Manager in 2023, and we invite any Wine Society Members who may be interested in serving to notify Sara Thom by Wednesday, August 31. All interested members will then be reviewed by the 2022 Nominating Committee for consideration.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Mapping American Beer Consumption

The Beer Institute has compiled a thirst-inducing map of beer consumption in the US.
