Three Club Management Professionals Achieve Certified Club Manager (CCM) Designation
CCM-PinCMAA is proud to announce the three club management professionals who have most recently attained the designation of Certified Club Manager. The CCM designation indicates that a club management professional has completed a rigorous course of study and training and shows a dedication to proficiency and expertise in club management. Approximately 1,500 CMAA members hold this prestigious designation.

Established in 1965, the CCM designation is the hallmark of professionalism in club management. It is a valuable, internationally recognized, and widely-respected mark of a manager’s long-term commitment to professional development and the club industry. In order to receive the CCM designation, one must invest time in specified educational requirements through the Business Management Institutes, attend the World Conference on Club Management, and maintain activity within their local chapter. After these conditions have been met, the individual must pass the CCM Exam.

The following club managers successfully met all CCM requirements in August:

  • Chris Kennedy, CCM, Ironwood Country Club, Palm Desert, CA
  • Darron McDaniel, CCM, Houston Racquet Club, Houston, TX
  • Scott Spencer, CCM, The Union Club, Cleveland, OH

The Club Management Association of America extends its sincere congratulations to these newly certified professionals and encourages them to continue their professional development in the future.

Your Chapter Credits Will Post Soon – Thank You for Your Patience
You may have noticed that there has been a delay in posting of credits from chapter meetings from the past two months. As with the installation of any new database system, there were a few kinks that needed to be worked out. CMAA is working closely with our database vendor to finalize the last details of the process to post chapter credits. The issue is very close to being resolved. The Education Department thanks all of you for your patience and understanding during this process.

Your Recruiting Q&A: Behavioral-Based Interviewing
Check out this series of Q&As from CMAA’s recent webinar, “Talent Acquisition: 13 Secrets to Recruiting and Retaining Top Talent," presented by Jill Chapman, Senior Performance Consultant, at Insperity.

Q: How can my club incorporate behavioral questions into our interview process? Do you have recommended resources?

If you google Behavioral-Based Interviewing, you can lose a full day reading the opinions and ideas addressing the interviewer and the interviewee! Let me save you some time! Behavioral-based interviewing works because it forces the candidates to recall a specific situation or task and relate how they behaved in that specific situation…not a hypothetical response of how they think they would behave or their opinion on how everyone should handle the same situation, or even some vague response about what they usually or generally did, or what their team did—not them specifically.

We have found past behavior predicts future success in the same situation. It’s been said that introducing behavioral questions into the interview process increases by 5.5 times the likelihood of making the right hire.

Of course, every interview is unique and each position within your facility requires varying competencies. So, determine what traits are most important to assess. Identify three to five characteristics or competencies that the ideal candidate will bring to the role. Perhaps analyze the strengths of current successful employees in the determination. Focus your questions on those limited behaviors. Then listen for the response. You’ll need your candidate to share the SITUATION/TASK, the ACTION they took when placed in that situation or faced with that task, and then the RESULT of their behaviors. We call this the STAR method of selection. You’re basically asking for the “Why did you do it? What did you do?” And “How did it turn out?”

For more examples, review this blog authored by my colleague Bonnie on 10 examples of competencies and questions. In addition, she shares some best practices for what to do once you’ve asked the questions and heard their response.

In her blog, Melissa Trocko says “resumes are written to put the applicant in the position to get the job. The interview is the time for the employer to truly assess the person behind the paper. Behavior based interviews can be an effective tool for employers.” Read more.

The archive of the entire webinar is now available on CMAA University under the Resource Library carousel, CMAA Research and Survey Reports category, and Recruiting Hourly Employees Industry Survey.

We hope you learned some tips to improving recruiting techniques and organizing your workforce so that you are in a better position to exceed your club's goals. To help put those tips into practice, Insperity is providing the complimentary workbook on which the presentation was based. To obtain this workbook or if you have any questions from the webinar, would like more information about how Insperity can help you from the first stages of recruitment to long-term employee retention, or how they can assist with all of your club’s HR needs through their new Workforce Administration™ solution, please contact 866-476-8597 or solutions@insperity.com.
