Certification Update: Expanded Competencies and Certification Maintenance Requirement Extension
The CMAA Board has approved two items impacting CMAA's hallmark certification, the Certified Club Manager (CCM) designation.

Like the extension granted during the 2008 recession, the CMAA Board has approved a one-year extension to the Certification Maintenance Requirement (CMR) for those individuals who need it based on hardships related to COVID-19. An extension will be granted for those who qualify at the end of a member's current maintenance period.

The Board also approved an update to the CMAA competency areas. The update includes a new competency area as well as updates to the current competencies. The expanded competencies are listed below:

1. Leadership
2. Interpersonal Skills
3. Club Governance
4. Accounting, Finance, and Data Analytics
5. External Governmental Influences
6. Human and Professional Resources
7. Membership and Marketing
8. Food and Beverage
9. Golf, Sports, Recreation, and Wellness
10. Facilities Management
11. Information Technology

The Professional Development team will introduce the changes in the competency areas into the Business Management Institute curriculum. Once adequately covered in BMI curriculum, the update will be reflected in the CCM exam. Adequate notice will be provided to the membership before that change is implemented.

For questions on these updates, please contact the Professional Development Department.

Chairman’s Message: Important Membership Announcements
Mark Bado 2020Dear CMAA Friends:

As I mentioned when I was first elected to the Board in 2014 and reelected in 2017, and as I reiterated just a few months ago when I accepted the Chairmanship of CMAA, our responsibilities as Board members are very direct and they include:

• Be a conduit to membership
• Govern by our policies
• Help develop and provide the mission/vision of our Association
• Aid in the development and execution of the Strategic Plan
• Support/evaluate/develop our Association's President/CEO

To that end I am pleased to announce that your Board of Directors has extended the contract of our President & CEO Jeff Morgan, FASAE, CAE. On behalf of the Board, I am pleased to share that we have renewed his agreement for an additional three years, extending his service through 2023. This is Jeff's third contract since his arrival in late 2014. Over the past six years, Jeff has advanced our organization to the benefit of our members, expanding research initiatives, events, and educational opportunities. He was a key factor in developing, finalizing, and co-creating our past two Strategic Plans with the current Plan running through 2024. His continued leadership of the National Headquarters team will enable us to continue our fruitful work and further our vision.

Further, as we continue to examine ways for our organization to promote diversity as addressed in our most recently developed strategic plan, as Board of Directors we have formed a Diversity & Equity in Club Leadership Task Force

CMAA is committed to equity and an ongoing dialogue across cultural lines as a strategy for excellence in serving our members, for addressing the needs of an increasingly diverse society, and as a mechanism for equipping current and future CMAA leaders.

As an association, we need to focus on education — the foundation of our organization. With diversity and equity issues at the forefront, we are dedicating resources to design and adopt methods across our events, programs, and services to ensure that CMAA welcomes and encourages participation and advancement for all.

This Task Force is co-chaired by Board Members Janine Budzius, CCM, CCE, and Richard LaRocca, CCM, CCE, and includes a cross-section of members and perspectives. The Task Force is working to establish its framework and guidelines and its work will begin with an emphasis on both short- and long-term objectives.

The Task Force members include:

Janine Budzius, CCM, CCE, Co-Chair
Richard LaRocca, CCM, CCE, Co-Chair
Joe Krenn, CCM, CCE
Randy Ruder, CCM, CCE
Oliver Boudin, CCM, CCE
Nadia Dunrod
Carrie Eyler
Passion Graham
Michael Henley, CCM
Kristen LaCount, CCM
Ana Muniz-Trboljevac
Jim Moody, Jr., CCM, CCE
Preston Smith
Kim Pasquale
Brian Watkins

Thank you for your continued support. I wish you and your family a safe, healthy, and enjoyable summer.

As always, it is an honor and privilege to be your Chairman,

Mark Bado, MCM, CCE

Navigable Waters Protection Rule Faces Multiple Legal Challenges
The Navigable Waters Protection Rule (NWPR) faced two separate legal challenges in recent weeks. On June 19, the federal district courts in Northern California and Colorado ruled on separate requests for preliminary injunctions to stop the rule from going into effect. The 2020 NWPR became effective in all states on June 22, except for Colorado. Read more in the Legislative Report

Congress Extends Payroll Protection Program into August
On June 30, the Senate passed S.4116, extending the application period for the Payroll Protection Program (PPP). The House of Representatives passed it the following day and the President signed it into law on July 4.

The bill allows for initial applications for funds to continue through August 8. Initially, the cutoff date was June 30. In his floor comments, bill sponsor Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) noted that $130 billion remains in available funding for the PPP. To date, $520.6 billion has been distributed. The legislation specifically enacts an extension of the initial filing date for the PPP but did not address the issue of or expand eligibility to other organizations, like 501(c)(7) clubs.

Congress is now in recess until July 20.
