Chapter Idea Fair
GMCMA’s Lake St. Clair Chapter Social
Greater Michigan Chapter
Entry Details
The Greater Michigan Chapter introduced a new annual summer social at Grosse Pointe Yacht Club to strengthen relationships among chapter members in a relaxed setting. The event began with a scenic cruise across Lake St. Clair and along the Detroit River aboard three private boats, each serving beverages and charcuterie. Members then returned to the Club for a barbecue dinner and lawn games on the East Lawn.
The event brought together members from across the state, creating an opportunity for professionals from different clubs, regions, and career levels to connect in a more personal setting. It offered an alternative to traditional educational meetings by fostering informal conversation, the exchange of ideas, and stronger professional relationships.
The social also enhanced member engagement by reinforcing that chapter involvement offers not only education and networking but also camaraderie and a stronger sense of community.
Implementation
Grosse Pointe Yacht Club partnered with the chapter to create a two-part experience featuring a two-hour boat cruise followed by a barbecue dinner. Attendance was limited to 50 participants to maintain an intimate atmosphere. Members were divided among three boats, ranging from 60 to 90 feet, before gathering on the East Lawn. The event was priced at $65 per person and promoted through chapter communications and a professionally designed invitation.
The reaction was overwhelmingly positive. Members appreciated the unique setting and the opportunity to connect with colleagues from across Michigan outside a formal meeting. The smaller boat groups fostered meaningful conversation, while the barbecue allowed those relationships to continue to develop.
The strong participation and enthusiasm demonstrated clear interest in experiential chapter programming. Based on the inaugural event's success, the chapter plans to continue the social annually and explore other host clubs and distinctive experiences.
