Chapter Idea Fair

PVCMA Summer of Interns

Winner

Philadelphia & Vicinity Chapter

Entry Details

A PVCMA strategic priority was to focus on student engagement, in particular in the summer season when many interns are working at our member clubs.  Over the summer we hosted a local PVCMA Road Rally and Intern Social. Through personal outreach from the leaders in our chapter we had strong attendance by students at each of the PVCMA summer educational sessions. The PVCMA Board feels this is a grass roots effort and the beginning of building annual events to welcome, network and provide opportunities for them learn about the club industry, build meaningful relationships with fellow students and mentors.  We also feel that this will help encourage students to go back to school after the summer with an understanding of what opportunities the club industry can provide and hopefully fellow students to explore hospitality & clubs.

Implementation

In mid-July we coordinated the road rally which gave the interns the opportunity to visit four Platinum Clubs in one day. Each location provided a tour which focused on specific topics, sports or amenities. The interns were able to learn more about strategic capital projects and renovations, championship golf and Philadelphia’s golf history with a special presentation by Mr. John Capers, Merion Golf Club’s Archive Committee Chair. We had 25 attendees representing 13 different universities and a few managers that helped facilitate the day.   Purposefully we held our Intern Social later in the month in hopes that the interns may have crossed paths with each other at the road rally or an earlier education in the summer. We felt the social was a success with over 30 students and interns networking with each other and PVCMA managers. Watching them socialize throughout the evening may have led you to believe they worked together all summer. It was very impressive to see the confidence in these young professionals noticeably increase from the beginning of the summer.  The PVCMA Board is proud of the focus, determination and willingness of leaders in our chapter to volunteer their time to mentor these emerging leaders from across the country and provide positive experiences during their short time in Philadelphia.  We look forward to adding additional events to the 2024 calendar, including a welcome reception earlier in the summer to kick-off their internships.
