Chapter Idea Fair

The Conference Became the Classroom

Florida Chapter

Entry Details

The FLCMAA Summer Conference Student Internship transforms the chapter’s largest professional gatherings into immersive classrooms for hospitality students.

Many students complete their education without seeing the full range of careers available within private clubs. Traditional internships provide valuable experience within one operation. FLCMAA created something different: access to an entire professional community.

Selected students support conference operations while participating in keynote sessions, leadership discussions, education, networking events, and conversations with club executives, faculty, speakers, and industry partners. They learn, contribute, connect, and explore rather than simply observing from the sidelines.

The program strengthens FLCMAA’s relationships with hospitality faculty and academic institutions while creating a visible pathway into the club industry. Students arrive as interns but leave with a broader understanding of the profession and a professional community behind them.

Implementation

FLCMAA worked with hospitality faculty and academic programs to recruit students through a clear application and referral process. Students demonstrating professionalism, initiative, and an interest in hospitality or club careers were selected for the experience.

Each intern received a pre-conference orientation, defined operational assignments and rotations, complimentary conference access, meals and lodging support, a branded polo, and dedicated time for education and networking. Students assisted with registration, attendee engagement, welcome materials, showcase preparation, session logistics, and other conference operations. Chapter leaders and industry partners also made direct introductions and discussed potential career paths.

Nine students from colleges and universities across the country participated in the inaugural initiative. Their response highlighted the value of learning from industry leaders, gaining firsthand experience behind a major professional event, and becoming part of an encouraging professional network. Members likewise embraced the opportunity to mentor students and introduce them to the depth of career paths available in the club industry.
