Idea Fair

A Sustainable Voyage

How has this idea enhanced your club's operation, etc.?

As a club rooted in sailing and life on the water, we intentionally highlighted and introduced a wine whose journey aligned with our values. We brought in a Joseph Drouhin 2022 Chablis that arrived in the U.S. by sailboat as part of the winery’s sustainability initiative.

The idea was based around vineyards being able to implement environmentally respectful practices. However, the delivery systems used to transport products has not changed. By shipping the 15,000 bottles of wine with TransOceanic Wind Transportation there was a 90% reduction in CO2 emissions and 98% less sulphur oxide.

BHYC is always looking for ways to remain environmentally friendly and follow a “Green” initiative. This gave us an opportunity to highlight how we are always searching for and supporting any and all sustainability practices.

How was this idea implemented, and what have been the club members' reactions?

We featured the wine as a by the glass and bottle special until all allocations were depleted. We educated the members on the wine and its journey through social media, email, and word of mouth. The members really enjoyed the story of the initiative and the environmental impact. It helped that the wine also tasted quite nice. Our communications team was able to have some fun with the concept as well, filming an instagram video of our Harbormaster sailing the final leg to the Club!

Members kept asking for it even after it was no longer available. We assured them that this will be an annual occurrence and that we will certainly continue to participate in Joseph Drouhin’s future initiatives.
