Celebrating a Century Covering for the Future

How has this idea enhanced your club's operation, etc.?

By replacing single-use plastic shrink wrap with reusable acrylic-coated polyester canvas covers, the club significantly reduced its reliance on disposable materials while improving the long-term care of its fleet. This idea enhanced Beach Point Club’s operations by introducing a more sustainable, cost-effective, and forward-looking approach to winter boat storage.

Operationally, the switch streamlined seasonal haul-out and storage processes. Canvas covers are easier to install, remove, and store than shrink wrap, eliminating the need for heat guns, disposal logistics, and annual coordination for plastic removal. This reduced staff time and simplified end-of-season and spring commissioning efforts. Because the covers are breathable, boats experienced less moisture buildup and mold over the winter, resulting in cleaner vessels, reduced maintenance, and less reliance on harsh cleaning chemicals at the start of the season.

How was this idea implemented, and what have been the club members' reactions?

The idea was implemented through a phased, pilot-style approach. As part of Beach Point Club’s Centennial planning, the leadership identified winter boat storage as a key opportunity to improve sustainability. After researching alternatives to shrink wrap and evaluating cost, durability, and maintenance benefits, the club approved the purchase of custom acrylic-coated polyester canvas covers for a select group of boats (junior sailing boats, the launch, and several adult sailboats). These boats were chosen to test performance across different sizes and usage types. The covers were professionally fitted and installed at the end of the season, and guidance was shared with members on proper use and storage to maximize lifespan.

The reaction from club members has been overwhelmingly positive. Members appreciated the club’s proactive commitment to sustainability, especially during the Centennial year, and many commented on the improved appearance and condition of the boats after winter storage. The breathable nature of the canvas covers, which reduced moisture and mold, was a frequently noted benefit. Several members have since requested information on vendors and pricing, and multiple members have already ordered custom canvas covers for their own boats. The success of the pilot has generated momentum within the community, and the club now plans to continue promoting reusable canvas covers with the long-term goal of transitioning all dockyard-stored boats away from single-use plastic shrink wrap.
