Honorable Mention
How has this idea enhanced your club's operation, etc.?
Curling Day in Canada is an annual nationwide celebration by Curling Canada to promote the sport across the country. The Granite Club recently celebrated its 150th anniversary by hosting a spectacular Curling Day in Canada outdoor bonspiel that drew an impressive turnout of 32 teams and over 128 participants. The event was broadcast and streamed live by The Sports Network (TSN), with TV hosts Bob Weeks and Lindsay Hamilton providing engaging commentary, and Granite Club Head Curling Professional John Epping serving as a special reporter throughout the day. Attendees enjoyed a variety of activities, including curling on the Granite 150 Outdoor Skating Rink, which added a fun twist to the festivities! The event paid tribute to the Club’s storied heritage, which began in 1875 when a handful of gentlemen first founded a rugged outdoor curling facility.
This event increased visibility and engagement for the Club and its Curling Section. By positioning curling in the spotlight, it reinforced the importance of the sport within the club community. This celebration highlighted that legacy, strengthened the Club’s reputation, fostered pride among Members, and created opportunities for growth and outreach—all while celebrating Granite 150.
How was this idea implemented, and what have been the club members' reactions?
The event’s primary objectives were to commemorate the Granite Club’s rich history and host a bonspiel celebrating its origins. A highlight of the celebration was the historic Brier Tankard trophy returning to its roots at the Granite Club—on proud display for attendees to admire and capture photos—honouring the Granite’s distinguished place in Canadian curling history as the host of the first 13 Briers after the tournament’s founding.
The day-long event also featured competitive yet friendly games, historical displays, and social opportunities. Invitations were extended to multiple Toronto-area clubs. Curling Section members were thrilled to host the celebration, warmly welcoming fellow curlers and enjoying a day filled with excellent curling and camaraderie. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many appreciating the historical focus and sense of community.
