Idea Fair
From Table to Tide: Oyster Shell Recycling
How has this idea enhanced your club's operation, etc.?
Oysters are a significant part of the culture of the Gulf Coast. They are a staple of local cuisine and a celebrated feature on many menus from Florida to Texas. Beginning in 2025, Lakeside Country Club embarked on a partnership with the Galveston Bay Foundation to recycle oyster shells from the Club’s culinary operation. Lakeside was the first Club in Houston to participate in this program. We are proud to share we recycled Over 4,000 oyster shells were recycled in our first year!
How was this idea implemented, and what have been the club members' reactions?
Shells are separated after service and collected in a special recycling bin. When the bin is full, the service is called for pick up. The shells are then taken to a site where the cleaning and curing process begins before being reintroduced to the coast line or for special projects. Given our close proximity to the Gulf and our robust enjoyment of oysters, it only made sense to participate in this program. As Club's tread carefully into sustainability efforts in our communities, programs and partnerships like this make it easy to participate. Members enjoy any element of sustainability we can adhere to, and therefore this one has been an easy one to share.
