Functional Step: A Fresh Group Exercise Class with Serious Energy
How has this idea enhanced your club's operation, etc.?
Following a year of transition within the Club’s Fitness and Wellness Departments and a quarterly GroupX schedule refresh, the team saw an opportunity to introduce something new and energizing for members. In response, the Club developed Functional Step, an in-house branded GroupX class that provides a consistent cardio format while allowing instructors flexibility to bring their own creativity and style to each class.
This “freestyle-within-a-framework” approach balances structure with innovation—giving members a reliable class they can count on, while keeping the experience fresh and engaging. Functional Step has strengthened the GroupX schedule by offering a modern take on traditional step classes and reinforcing the Club’s commitment to high-quality, forward-thinking fitness programming.
How was this idea implemented, and what have been the club members' reactions?
Functional Step was introduced with the September GroupX schedule change and quickly became a standout offering. Instructors were empowered to design dynamic, varied classes within a defined framework, blending simple choreography, athletic movement patterns, and optional strength elements.
Member response has been very positive. Participants enjoy the high energy, variety, and professional feel of the class, while also appreciating that no two sessions feel exactly the same. Attendance has remained strong, with an average of eight participants per class and 29 unique members participating between September and November 2025—demonstrating strong engagement and enthusiasm for this innovative GroupX format.
