Growing Oysters Restoring Bays

Winner

How has this idea enhanced your club's operation, etc.?

Beach Point Club’s oyster gardening initiative has strengthened both member engagement and environmental stewardship. By partnering with Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Club involved members and youth sailors in hands-on restoration, teaching marine ecology, water quality, and sustainable practices. The project broadened participation beyond sailing, fostered community involvement, and improved awareness of local environmental issues.

Additionally, the initiative positioned the Club as a regional leader in sustainability, serving as a model for other yacht clubs and helping protect the bays and waters that support our sailing community for generations.

How was this idea implemented, and what have been the club members' reactions?

Members responded enthusiastically. Many enjoyed the hands-on experience, learning about marine ecology, water quality, and sustainable practices while contributing directly to environmental restoration. The project also fostered a sense of community, as participants collaborated across age groups and skill levels. The success of the initiative has inspired members to continue oyster gardening in future seasons and has encouraged other clubs in the region to consider similar conservation efforts.
