Idea Fair
Junior Sunset Swing & Sail
How has this idea enhanced your club's operation, etc.?
The Junior Sunset Swing & Sail was a unique end-of-summer event that flipped traditional programming by placing juniors in the instructor role. Junior Tennis and Junior Sailing instructors were intentionally swapped for the evening, which meant the juniors were leading the action on both the courts and the water while their coaches stepped into the learner role.
This setup allowed juniors to confidently show off the skills they developed throughout the season in a fun and meaningful way. From an operational perspective, the event encouraged cross-program collaboration, reinforced skill development, and increased junior engagement.
How was this idea implemented, and what have been the club members' reactions?
The event was designed as an evening program, beginning with junior-led tennis activities, followed by a buffet dinner, and concluding with a sunset sail overseen by our Harbormaster. Junior Tennis and Junior Sailing instructors were intentionally swapped, which naturally placed the juniors in the teaching role while coaches participated as learners. This structure allowed juniors to lead with confidence and apply their skills in a fun, supportive setting.
Member response was overwhelmingly positive. Juniors were proud and energized to teach their instructors. We also received feedback that the parents enjoyed watching the activities while dining from the porch. The excitement continued well beyond the event, with many juniors talking about the experience in the days that followed. Overall, the event was seen as a memorable way to celebrate the end of the summer season.
