Student & Faculty Chapter Idea Fair
CMAA Design Challenge
Best in Show Winner
Kent State University Student Chapter
Description
This idea was designed to create meaningful interaction between student CMAA members and professional CMAA members in a setting that was both educational and engaging. While our student chapter already has a strong relationship with the Greater Cleveland Chapter through educational sessions, guest speakers, and club tours, this experience offered a more immersive and collaborative opportunity.
Students worked side by side with experienced club event managers to address real-world challenges related to private club events, allowing for organic mentorship, conversation, and relationship-building in a relaxed environment. This hands-on format provided deeper insight into club operations than traditional classroom or observational experiences.
Several participating professionals were alumni of our program, further strengthening student connection to the CMAA and illustrating clear career pathways within the club industry.
This initiative enhanced our chapter by strengthening relationships with participating clubs and reinforcing camaraderie between student and professional members. It positioned our student chapter as an engaged, innovative partner within the Greater Cleveland Chapter and reinforced the value of CMAA membership through meaningful professional collaboration.
Implementation
The idea was implemented in the Fall of 2025 for our CMAA student members at Kent State University. Chapter officers and faculty invited four local clubs to participate, strengthening partnerships with the Greater Cleveland Chapter. Two professional board members assisted with securing event décor and served as judges alongside faculty advisors, ensuring industry relevance.
The program was designed as an innovative, hands-on learning experience that combined competition with real-world application of private club event management concepts. Pairing students directly with professional event managers encouraged leadership development, mentorship, and meaningful professional engagement. Plus, it was fun!
Chapter members responded very positively. Students felt that the competitive format enhanced both learning and excitement. Professional participants agreed, commenting on the quality of student interaction and noting that the concept could even be a great member event!
