Student & Faculty Chapter Idea Fair
From Classroom to Clubhouse
Johnson & Wales University, NC, Student Chapter
Description
We have implemented several initiatives to advocate for careers in club management and support students’ professional growth in this field. These efforts include hosting industry guest speakers in person and via Zoom, giving students firsthand insights into club leadership and operations. We also organize tours of local private clubs to expose students to the wide range of career opportunities within the industry.
Additionally, we host on-campus networking events and panel discussions with club managers from across the country, providing students with mentorship, career guidance, and professional connections. We further support career development by offering recruiting opportunities at professional golf tournaments, giving students practical, hands-on experience that often leads to internships or seasonal roles. These initiatives collectively promote awareness of club management as a rewarding career path and prepare students to succeed in the industry.
These initiatives have greatly strengthened our chapter by increasing student engagement, improving professional development, and deepening our connections with the private club industry. Guest speakers and club tours have given students valuable firsthand insights, making the industry more accessible and encouraging greater interest in club management careers.
Our networking events and panel discussions have enhanced our student chapter’s visibility and created meaningful pathways for mentorship, internships, and career exploration. Additionally, offering recruiting opportunities at professional golf tournaments has provided students with practical, hands-on experience that builds confidence and strengthens their résumés.
Overall, these efforts have elevated our student chapter by creating a more informed, connected, and professionally prepared student community
Implementation
We implemented this idea by leveraging local resources and creating structured opportunities for students to engage directly with the private club industry, combining practical experiences, mentorship, and professional development. Members have embraced these initiatives enthusiastically, gaining a deeper understanding of club operations and career pathways.
Through these experiences, students have been able to build extensive professional networks with club managers, event coordinators, and other industry leaders. These connections have not only provided guidance and mentorship but also opened doors to internships, seasonal positions, and full-time career opportunities in club management. Many students have reported that these experiences increased their confidence, strengthened their understanding of industry expectations, and helped them develop practical skills in leadership, operations, and member relations. As a result, members feel better prepared to pursue successful careers in the private club industry and have expressed appreciation for the chapter’s role in bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world career opportunities.
