Indian Harbor Yacht Club was founded in 1889 by dedicated sailors intent on being part of the thriving sailing community on Long Island Sound. The club's mission was 'to encourage and foster the sport of yachting, the art of yacht design and construction and the science of seamanship and navigation'​. The mission holds true today as our members continue to excel on the race course, embrace the pleasures of cruising and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow members.

Club is open 6 days per week, 11 months per year.

Job Summary

This position oversees all aspects of the yacht club’s communications and member development, assuring successful member recruiting, member engagement, satisfaction, and retention.  This position works closely with the general manager, board of directors, club committees, proposers, current members, and other club administrative staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a cohesive communications strategy that enhances the awareness of the yacht club’s brand and communicates the club’s story both to the general public and more importantly, to the club’s member community.  This effort entails working collaboratively with the management team, club committees and board of directors.
  • Create content and manage the club’s various communications media -- website, weekly news emails, event flyers, seasonal publication, social media channels, and membership book -- as well as identify and manage any new media needed for effective communications.
  • Engage with Admissions and Member Committees to respond to membership inquiries and to undertake member and candidate networking events.
  • Coordinate communications with candidates and their proposers throughout the admissions process, including the welcome letter and membership package to new members. 
  • Host new member club tours in cooperation with the General Manager, Waterfront Director and Food & Beverage Director.
  • Post new members on the website, in the newsletter, and on the club bulletin boards.
  • Implement and manage a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system, and demonstrate an understanding of this tool and delivery of statistics related to inquiries, membership categories (quantity and source), prospect pipeline (sorted by rank), admissions (paced by budget forecast) – as well as communicate feedback from candidates, proposers, and supporting members to the relevant committee.
  • Send resignation acknowledgement letters to outgoing members and solicit feedback on the reasons for leaving.
  • Participate actively in committee review meetings regarding admissions, membership, events & activities, and communications.
  • Be a supportive team player who actively contributes in staff meetings and effectively transfers information which helps all associates communicate and market the club to members.

Candidate Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree is required and preference will be given to candidates with a Master’s degree in an appropriate field that is relevant to the job description.
  • Previous private club experience preferred, yacht club experience favored
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher
  • Simple graphic design experience or photo editing skills required (PicMonkey or other apps)
  • Sales, relationship, and customer service knowledge/experience ideal
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written word
  • Capable interviewer, content writer, savvy marketer, and copy editor

  • Friendly, social, patient, diplomatic, positive attitude
  • Marketing and communications acumen
  • Managing various levels of the process of marketing, communications and member relations
