Chapter Idea Fair
The Golden Table: Executive Chef Leadership Series
Golden State Chapter
Entry Details
TGSC wanted to expand Chapter engagement beyond the General Manager and create a meaningful pathway into CMAA for another critical member of the club leadership team: the Executive Chef.
Instead of beginning with a membership solicitation, TGSC began with value.
The Golden Table is a year-long Executive Chef Leadership Series built around five components:
Leadership Development • Culinary Excellence • Chef Community • Membership Recruitment • Peer-to-Peer Learning
The series gives Executive Chefs access to relevant professional development, respected culinary leaders, and a peer community while introducing prospective chef members to the value of TGSC and CMAA.
The recruitment strategy is simple:
Experience the Value → Build Relationships → Join the Community
Rather than asking a prospective member to join first and discover the benefits later, The Golden Table allows culinary professionals to experience Chapter education, relationships, and community firsthand.
The program strengthens TGSC's existing culinary community while creating a new pathway to membership for Executive Chefs who may not previously have viewed CMAA as their professional association.
The innovation is using professional development and community as the recruitment strategy—demonstrating membership value before asking someone to join.
Implementation
TGSC created The Golden Table as a year-long series rather than a one-time culinary program, allowing relationships and community to develop over time.
Programming is developed specifically around the professional interests and responsibilities of club Executive Chefs and features respected culinary leaders and industry experts. Peer-to-peer discussion is incorporated so participants learn not only from presenters, but also from one another.
TGSC actively asks its members to share these opportunities with their Executive Chefs and culinary leadership teams, extending the Chapter's reach beyond the individual holding the CMAA membership.
Dedicated communications, programming schedules, and video highlights extend the reach of the series and help build recognition for The Golden Table as its own community within TGSC.
The model is readily replicable: identify an underrepresented segment of the club leadership team, develop programming around its professional needs, invite members and prospective members, and allow participation to demonstrate the value of membership.
For TGSC, The Golden Table is doing more than educating chefs. It is building community and creating a new front door into CMAA membership. And that is exactly the point.
