Manager in Development

First introduced in 2000, the Manager in Development (MID) was designed as a mentor/mentee program to educate entry- and mid-level managers through exposure to diverse departments within a club operation. The MID program began as the brainchild of William A. Schulz, MCM, CCE, as he developed the concept for his successful MCM monograph, Club Management Opportunities Assistant Manager Development Program.

Previously, the MID program was available to the club industry as a hands-on training manual. Today, the MID program is presented on CMAA University in 12 modules that can be completed in their entirety in three years, by specialization in a year or by individual topic in three months while working under the professional guidance of a mentor.

Each of the 12 modules in CMAA’s MID program presents information about a specific topic of critical importance for successful club management, addressing CMAA’s Competency areas. Five Club Management Institute (CMI) Credits will be awarded for the successful completion of each module. A manager who completes all 12 modules will earn 60 CMI credits and a diploma. In addition, one Association Activity credit will be awarded to the mentor for each session that he or she helps to deliver and by mentoring an individual through a specialization will fulfill the mentorship requirement of the Certified Chief Executive (CCE) designation.

Each of the modules (listed below by specialization) is meant to be completed while working at a club and includes a textbook, portfolio builders, and a PowerPoint presentation to supplement the education from the mentor. For more information on the program, please review the Manager in Development Program Guide for mentees, mentors, and reviewers.
