Beyond the Blazer: Connecting Students to Careers in the Private Club Industry

Johnson & Wales University, NC, Student Chapter

Description

The Careers in Private Club Networking Night has significantly enhanced our chapter’s operations by serving as a cornerstone professional development initiative that directly aligns with our mission to connect students to careers in the private club industry. Now approaching its 10th year, this event has strengthened the chapter’s organizational structure by requiring intentional planning, collaboration between student leaders and faculty, and consistent engagement with industry professionals. Operationally, the event has elevated the chapter’s credibility and visibility within both the Johnson & Wales University community and the national CMAA network. Hosting 10–15 private clubs annually and engaging 50–80 students each year has established our chapter as a reliable partner for private club leaders seeking motivated, career-ready students. By utilizing JWU’s Beverage Lab, the chapter reinforces experiential learning while executing a polished, industry relevant event that mirrors real world club environments. This initiative has also improved member engagement and leadership development by providing students with hands on experience in event execution, professional communication, and relationship building. Most importantly, it has produced tangible outcomes—mentorships, internships, and post-graduate employment opportunities—while fostering confidence and professionalism among members.

Implementation

The Careers in Private Club Networking Night was implemented through a structured, student led planning process supported by faculty advisors and industry partners. Chapter leadership begins preparations well in advance by identifying and inviting private club professionals from a variety of regions, club types, and leadership roles. Once participants are confirmed, the event is intentionally designed around small group rotations to encourage meaningful conversation, relationship building, and mentorship rather than brief, transactional interactions. The chapter leverages JWU’s Beverage Lab to create an immersive, professional environment that reflects real world private club operations. Members of the executive team are assigned specific operational roles—including event flow, professional introductions, guest hospitality, and follow-up communication—allowing students to gain hands on experience in event management and professional engagement. Branding elements, such as official JWU apparel and curated thank you bags, are incorporated to reinforce professionalism and appreciation for industry involvement. Chapter members have responded overwhelmingly positively to this initiative. Students consistently report increased confidence in networking and professional communication, as well as a clearer understanding of career pathways within the private club industry. Many members have secured internships, seasonal positions, and full time opportunities as a direct result of connections made during the event. Additionally, members take pride in representing the chapter at a high level, viewing the event as a signature experience that strengthens camaraderie, leadership development, and their sense of belonging within CMAA.
