Mark Your Calendars: Two Scholarship Application Deadlines Approaching

There are two scholarship deadlines on September 1:

John and Andrea Dorman Scholarship

In 2025, John and Andrea Dorman established the John and Andrea Dorman Scholarship through The Club Foundation to support emerging leaders in the club industry. This scholarship provides financial assistance to participate in CMAA’s Business Management Institutes (BMI). Inspired by their longstanding connection to the industry and deep commitment to the professional growth of club employees, the Dormans created this fund to invest in the next generation of club leaders.

“A fulfilling and successful career in Club Management is built on many components,” says John Dorman, CCM, General Manager of The University Club of New York. “Andrea and I believed that the scholarships awarded through the endowment will help support those careers, provide opportunities for intellectual growth, and the development of meaningful relationships that last a lifetime. It is a pleasure to support future managers in an industry that has given so much to us.”

To review applications guidelines and learn more about John and Andrea Dorman, please visit the application page on The Club Foundation’s website. Applications for this inaugural year are due September 1.

Sally Burns Rambo Scholarship

Established in 2012 by the Texas Lone Star Chapter in partnership with The Club Foundation, the Sally Burns Rambo Scholarship honors Sally’s unwavering dedication and heartfelt commitment to the club management profession. This scholarship was created to advance educational opportunities specifically for women in the club industry.

“Sally had a gift for bringing people together and lifting others up,” said Sam Brewster, Managing Director of the Texas Lone Star Chapter. “This scholarship carries her spirit forward by creating opportunities for women in club management, a cause she believed in deeply. Through this scholarship, her legacy lives on!”

To learn more about past recipients from across the country and to review application guidelines, please visit the application page on The Club Foundation’s website. Applications for 2025 are due September 1.

Share Your Opinion to Help Guide Research

CMAA is conducting a short survey to evaluate research topics that will add value to CMAA and the private club industry overall.

Annually, CMAA Student Chapter Faculty are invited to submit research proposals for The Club Foundation Research Grant. To enhance the evaluation process, your feedback will be used to prioritize which submissions are approved for research projects.

This survey will take less than five minutes to complete, and your input will be very helpful in shaping the direction of future research projects.

If you have any questions, please contact Amilcar Davy, Director of Research, at 703-739-9500.

There’s No Wait List for Entertainment

Keep your club copyright compliant with exclusive savings.

Club management professionals know just how important is to create a warm and welcoming club atmosphere. Between family movie nights or checking the news between the cafe and the locker room, film and television content is crucial to creating that sense of community. That’s why we work with the Motion Picture Licensing Corporation (MPLC) to ensure our members can easily and affordably comply with federal laws and regulations.

MPLC offers a solution that allows private clubs of all sizes to enhance their guest experience by being able to legally show movies and TV programs. And CMAA members have exclusive access to the deepest discounts with MPLC in the industry.

MPLC is the global leader in public performance licensing, representing Hollywood’s biggest names like The Walt Disney Company, Universal, Paramount, and Pixar, among others. For decades, MPLC has helped businesses and organizations legally show television and film content in public spaces outside of traditional theaters. This includes campgrounds, community venues, bars, hotels, and many other businesses where guests and customers gather. By securing an MPLC Blanket License, you ensure that your club televisions can legally entertain members and their guests while complying with federal copyright law.

The distinction between private and public performance is important under US copyright law. While people can watch movies in their homes without a license, any space where people gather, even in a private club, requires one if movies or TV shows are shown. MPLC makes this process simple, affordable, and fast, so you can focus on what matters most: delivering memorable experiences. With just a few clicks, you can secure the rights to show content, ensuring you remain compliant and avoid any legal risks.

MPLC’s Blanket License provides private clubs with:

  • Unlimited showings of movies and TV programs covered by MPLC’s vast catalog of rightsholders.
  • No complicated reporting requirements, making the license easy to manage.
  • Comprehensive coverage, allowing you to show films in any indoor locations or on club grounds.
  • Exclusive CMAA member pricing can save you more than 18 percent on an annual license while keeping you covered.

Find additional details online on how to utilize your CMAA membership to secure a discounted MPLC Blanket License.
