How to Get the Most Out of a Conference: Your Advance Guide to the World Conference

The 2023 CMAA World Conference & Club Business Expo is a busy, five days and features more than 70 sessions, multiple networking events, and many opportunities for career advancement. Use these tips to get the most out of the event:

Dress Code

  • All Education and the Opening and Closing Business Sessions will be Business Casual (no jackets required).
  • The Networking Event will be resort casual. The event will be a mix of indoor and outdoor spaces so dress for your comfort.

Education: Planning Your Schedule and Earning Credits
Get a jump start on picking your Conference education sessions. With multiple concurrent session options, it is always best to plan what you want to attend. No preregistration is required; you can attend the sessions you want but it will save you time on site. Access the World Conference App to explore all available sessions.

Club Management Institute (CMI) credits are awarded via verified attendance. At the end of each session, your presenter will share a keyword. Make note of this keyword.

To claim credits for a session:

  • Find the session that you attend on the schedule within the event App.
  • Locate the section titled “Surveys” under the speaker’s picture.
  • Click on the survey and complete the short questions asking feedback on the session and presenter(s) of the session and the keyword given at the session.
  • You will only have 48 hours after each session to claim your credits for a session. Please enter your request shortly after the session.
  • That’s all that you will need to do. The app will know who you are and report your member number back to CMAA. Shortly after Conference, the Professional Development will post the credits to your record and attendees will be notified.

Let’s Talk About Bylaws

While bylaws may not be exciting subject matter, they’re still an important and necessary component of CMAA’s governance structure. Like your clubs, CMAA maintains a vital set of bylaws that help maintain and regulate itself—our internal laws. Bylaws also ensure that the Association will operate in a constant, particular manner and have a certain vision. CMAA reviews its bylaws annually through a committee process and with Board oversight.

After this past year’s review process, there are five proposed Bylaw amendments for your consideration in the 2023 CMAA election. Due to a fair amount of reading involved, the Bylaws Committee and the National Board kindly request your thoughtful review of these proposals in advance of accessing the online ballot or voting onsite at the World Conference and Club Business Expo in Orlando, FL.

Here is a brief synopsis for the 2023 proposed National Bylaw amendments:

  • Proposition #1: Involves updating the CMAA Bylaws to correct the executive staff titling throughout the official document.
  • Proposition #2: Notes a procedural change to the national Secretary-Treasurer election process, modifying the time of year the position is determined (spring vs. summer BOD meeting).
  • Proposition #3: Recommends a chairmanship change for the Budget & Finance Committee from the Vice Chairman to the Secretary-Treasurer as an association best practice.
  • Proposition #4: Recommends a name change for the Bylaws Committee to the Bylaw & Policy Committee, which better reflects its current duties.
  • Proposition #5: Recommends a name change and charter update for the Strategic Planning Committee to the Strategic & Organizational Culture Committee; this will reflect a proactive effort/response toward any social and cultural influences on the CMAA community and ensure those are covered in CMAA’s strategic plan.

Online voting is live and will continue through February 22. In addition to the Bylaw amendments noted above, CMAA presents a great slate of candidates who are each prepared to serve. For general elections to the National Board of Directors, there are three, three-year terms, and one, one-year term available in 2023.

All eligible voters are urged to vote as active voter participation is critically important to ensure your voice is heard regarding the future of our fine Association. Thank you!

Look for The Club Foundation at World Conference

There are many ways to support the mission of The Club Foundation, and each year, our ability to award scholarships and grants is dependent upon generous contributions from you and so many others. Together we are fueling the future of our industry.

The World Conference is a time when we herald the good work of The Foundation. To help us raise the funds needed for scholarships and grants, The Club Foundation is responsible for two key events: the Golf Tournament and the ClubLove 5K.

The Golf Tournament will take place on the afternoon of February 23, at the Ritz Carlton Golf Club.  We are pleased to share that the tournament is sold out! For those interested in sponsoring a component of the event, please check out the sponsorship guide or contact us through our website contact form.

The ClubLove 5K is a longstanding tradition during World Conference.  You can still sign up for the 5K which takes place on the morning of February 27, on the grounds of the Marriott Gaylord Palms Resort. You can add it to your existing conference registration or add it when you register. Participate in the Club Employee Demographic Assessment at World Conference

Your club is invited to participate in the Club Employee Demographic Assessment. This research survey presented with support from CMAA and The Club Foundation, will provide a baseline and snapshot of the demographics across the club industry. This three-year project will enable your club to benchmark your changing demographics over time.

To make participation easy, attendees at the 2023 CMAA World Conference and Club Business Expo will be able to complete the assessment in-person.

Your club's participation and information are confidential. Please submit one response per club. You will gain insight into your team’s diversity and assist in formulating your own DEI strategy and tactics. If your club has already participated in the survey, we thank you for your support.

Your club's participation in this assessment will provide data to help CMAA build education and resources to help clubs recruit and retain diverse talent, making it attractive for everyone to choose to work in clubs.

Introducing CMAA Communities!

CMAA is excited to announce the launch of its new special interest communities, offering club professionals opportunities to connect, learn, and engage with other individuals who are involved and interested in various segments of club management. The Club Wellness Community (CWC) officially launched in January 2023, followed by the Communications Community.

These professional groups are available to both CMAA members, as well as non-members. Each community will provide resources, virtual events, and an online networking forum to its subscribers, as well as an annual summit based on the community’s focus. CMAA members may opt-in to subscribe as part of their membership, while non-members will pay an annual subscription.

“Our industry is multi-faceted and club professionals truly benefit from connecting with one another on issues they face in their clubs,” says Jeff Morgan, FASAE, CAE, President and CEO of CMAA. “The Communities will give both our members and industry leaders opportunities to have access to content that is immediately applicable to their current roles.”

Katherine Lord, Director of Community Operations shares, “[communities] are a less formal, easily accessible way for people to connect. They don’t have to wait until an annual conference to share with one another, but it will give them stronger bonds and relationships for when they are together in person at national events.”

Stay tuned for more information about additional communities launching later this year.
